While we’ve all heard the proper practices of an efficient morning routine discussed at length, it’s rare that you’ll hear someone talk about their evening routine. I mean, what else is there? Other than coming home directly from work, the gym, or the kids’ daycare, and sinking into your couch until bedtime. But, the fact is, evening routines are just as important to your health and productivity! In fact, a smooth nightly routine can lead to better sleep, more energy, and less hassle in the morning hours when everyone is trying to get started with the day.
Before you head home from work or sign-off your computer, make sure you cut off all caffeine after 4 PM, while remaining completely hydrated throughout the day. You’ll also want to establish a clear time to cut off all work tasks for the day and focus on your own hobbies, interests, and activities. Once you settle into your own personal routine, be sure to avoid alcohol and treat yourself to a healthy dinner. You should also take some time to tidy around your apartment home, prepare for tomorrow’s to-do list, and just enjoy this time for yourself. It’s all about work-life balance, after all!
Now, right before bed is where things can get a little tricky. But, you need to stick to your routine no matter the temptation! An hour or so before your bedtime, you’ll want to step away from all screens at least 30 minutes beforehand. It’s also important to take some time to reflect on your day—what went well? What didn’t turn out so hot? This practice allows you to acknowledge the places you have room for improvement while recognizing your gratitude for the day.
Finally, get all your hygiene out of the way, whether it’d be with your teeth, face, or otherwise. If you feel the need, practice some bedtime yoga, mediation, or stretches to really wind down. Now, close your eyes, snuggle into your pillow, and keep the same commitment to yourself from now on. If you want to keep with the practice of evening routines, you’ll have to make sure you stick to the same schedule and bedtime each and every night from now on.
