Many people find that they are a bit confused when it comes to tipping. How much do you tip at the hair salon? Do you tip at a buffet-style restaurant? Should you give a tow truck driver a tip? With some help from the folks at Tipping.org, we’ve put together a list of tipping tips to help you next time you are wondering how much to take out of your wallet.
Airports
Skycaps should get at least $1.00 per bag. You do not tip flight attendants.
Hair Salons/Barber Shops
If you are just getting your hair cut, a tip of 15% is appropriate. If you are having your hair colored or are receiving a permanent, you may tip up to 20%. Tip $1 or $2 to the person who washes your hair if this is a different person. Manicurist should be tipped at least $2, up to 15% if you have more extensive service.
Restaurants
Generally, tipping 15% for good service is acceptable at a restaurant. If you are at a finer restaurant (i.e., one that provides wine service, fine food, and excellent service), consider tipping 20%. A coat room or rest room attendant should be tipped $1.00. If you are eating at a buffet-style restaurant, tipping 5 to 10% of the bill is suggested. This depends on how much service you actually receive, including whether your drinks are refilled or other services. Your bartender should receive 10 to 15% of the bar bill.
Other Services
Dog groomers can expect to receive 15% of the bill. A tip of 15% for a taxi driver is acceptable. The pizza or Chinese food delivery person should be tipped $2 to $3, depending on distance, $5 if it is a large order. A tow truck driver should be tipped $5 to $10–you never know when you may need another tow with the same driver.
